Ron and Tasha Photo Shoot
[2011-04-06]
This image of me and my beloved Natasha was taken during a promo shoot for my True Blue Spirit article. Saved from near death, I found the starving pup healing from a gun wound that left her blind in one eye nearly 6 years ago while on assignment for Western Canada Wilderness Committee in the East Shore Wilderness Area near Lake Winnipeg. Since then she is always by my side and together we travel Coast to Coast in our endless search of capturing the amazing Canadian Landscape on film.

True Blue Magazine Feature and Covers
[2011-03-16]
My work and an article about me appeared in True Blue Magazine this year.
An excerp from the article : "Ron takes his connection with his photography to a special level. No digital imagery here. Working with a 1950’s mahogany Deardorff camera complete with leather bellows, this is the same type of camera used by photographer Ansel Adams at the turn of the last century."

First Colour 8x10 Large Format Photograph
[2010-11-05]
Here is a post of my very first colour photograph taken with the recently purchased 8x10 Deardorff wood camera. Having found this gorgeous cove on a previous outing to the West Coast, I returned when the light was more favourable to capture this image. Although aesthetically beautiful, I feel I have more work to do and consider this photograph merely a sketch towards something greater. Not only must the light be timed but the ocean tides as well - it may be some time before this image transpires on film to satisfy my vision, but I am more than determined to try as it will be well worth the wait.

Travelling Photographer Lights Up The West Coast
[2010-10-15]
by Erin McMullan, Westcoaster.ca
Packing up his gear on Ucluelet’s Whiskey Dock, Ron Smid is interrupted by a commercial fisherman asking about his vintage large-format camera.
This drawing of strangers into conversation about his art has become a recurring signature moment, as Smid, a 37-year-old Kitchener, Ont. native, has chased the light across Canada during the past 17 years.
Inspired by classic North American landscape photographers, Smid uses an 8x10 Deardorff Woodfield based on 1930s technology. Smid’s large-scale Cibachrome fine-art prints, which seem almost “luminescent,” are created in collaboration with Ansel Adam’s master printer, Michael Wilder, and signed by both.

New Deardorff 8x10 Camera Unveiled
[2010-10-01]
After launching myself into 4x5 large format film photography a few years back and managing to capture some key images to add to my Canadian collection, I became eager to take my work to an even higher level. This photograph was snapped as I held my new vintage Deardorff 8x10 wood field camera for the very first time. Although weighing in at an imposing 12 pounds, the trade-off is the ability to capture the most minute intimate details of the natural world with its immense 8x10 inch sized negative. Inspired by American master photographers Ansel Adams and Edward Weston who both worked with these very same cameras more than a half a century ago, I look forward to following the tradition in my pursuit of capturing spellbinding images of the incredible Canadian Landscape.
